Fibrosis Treatment

Fibrosis after liposuction is the formation of lumps, scarring, or thickened tissue caused by prolonged swelling during healing. During the first 10 days after surgery, fibrosis is usually minimal. In rare cases, fibrosis may begin to develop as early as day 4 or 5.

The earlier fibrosis treatment begins, the faster and more effective the results.

This treatment uses targeted specialised massage techniques to break down post-surgery fibrosis and scar tissue.

Special pads can be purchased to support the process, and clients should wear their compression garment daily until the fibrosis resolves.

For stubborn or deep fibrosis or scar tissue, laser removal by a specialist doctor may be required.

What are the causes of fibrosis after liposuction?

Fibrosis is primarily caused by the trauma from the liposuction cannula as fat is suctioned and the instrument moves beneath the skin. This trauma leads to inflammation and, eventually, fibrosis. While it can’t be completely prevented, more tissue trauma during surgery increases the risk and severity of fibrosis.

How to prevent fibrosis

  • Choose an experienced surgeon who understands their limits.

  • Select the correct type and size of compression garment.

  • Use foams to help reduce swelling quickly.

  • Ensure compression is even all around your body.

  • Use a waist trainer that fits properly and does not fold.

  • Select an aftercare therapist experienced in post-surgical care.

  • Ensure massages are gentle for the first 10 days.

  • Avoid cavitation and radiofrequency skin tightening, as these can increase collagen production.

  • Do not use wood therapy early on, as it is too aggressive and can cause additional scar tissue and pain during healing.
