After any plastic surgical procedure, especially hi-definition liposuction, patients experience severe swelling and bruising that can last for weeks to months and the flow of lymph can be interrupted by the surgery, which can result in reduced healing, fibrosis (scar tissue, dimpled, uneven skin and the possibility of developing seromas (pockets of serous fluid). Plastic surgeons frequently recommend Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) after liposuction, or after abdominoplasty with liposuction (a ‘tummy-tuck’). If you have multiple procedures simultaneously (liposuction, breast work and tummy tuck, for example), MLD will be even more necessary to address swelling and tissue hardness. ​ Manual Lymphatic Drainage accelerates recovery and decreases the chance for irregularities, lumps or bumps, and scar tissue formation, which can all affect the final cosmetic outcome. It also helps the skin to tighten and conform to the new body shape and sculpted musculature during the liposculpture procedure. ​ To receive the full benefit of Manual Lymphatic Drainage after plastic surgery it is best to receive a treatment as soon as possible after the procedure. As a general rule, though, it’s better to ask your surgeon when you can start your sessions as every case is different. ​ Usually a minimum of 10 to 15 post-surgery treatments are reccomended. Do ask your surgeon how many sessions you are likely to require as each person's needs will be different. I recommend clients have at least one MLD (manual lymphatic drainage) treatment 24-48 hours prior to surgery and again, may surgeons recommend this. This will prepare and cleanse the skin tissue of impurities, giving the surgeon clean, healthy tissue to work with, reducing the risk of infection and speeding up the healing process.
